How Term Insurance Till 99 Works

Term insurance till 99 is a term life policy that covers you until age 99, rather than ending at 65 or 70 like most term plans. If you die while covered, your family receives a fixed lump sum.

term till 99

Because the cover lasts almost a lifetime, one plan does two jobs. While you are working, it protects your family against the loss of your income. Once you retire, the same cover becomes money you leave behind, which is why it is one of the main types of legacy planning insurance in Singapore.

If leaving money behind is your main aim, make a nomination on the policy as part of your wider estate planning, so the payout goes to the people you choose.

The premium pays for cover only. Most term to 99 plans have no cash value, so if you stop paying, the cover ends and nothing comes back. That keeps the premium well below a whole life plan with the same sum assured, although it costs more than term cover that ends at 65.

You can usually add riders for total and permanent disability (TPD) or critical illness (CI). A rider may not last as long as the base cover, though, so check each rider’s expiry age.

Why Cover to 99 Instead of 65?

A term plan to 65 protects your family through your working years, and most people reach 65 without needing to claim. Cover to 99 lasts long enough that it is far more likely to pay out in the end.

This speaks to a common complaint about term insurance: you pay premiums for 30 years, stay healthy, and get nothing back. With cover to 99, your family is more likely to receive the sum assured at some point.

SmartWealth’s analysis of SingStat’s Complete Life Tables for Singapore Resident Population shows how wide that gap is for a resident aged 35.

Source: SmartWealth’s analysis of SingStat life tables, 2025. You can check these figures for your own age and sex with SingStat’s Life Expectancy Calculator. We use 100 as the end of cover because term to 99 plans end at 99 or 100, depending on the insurer.

Read the other way, these are the odds of the cover paying out.

Fewer than one in 11 men aged 35 would see cover to 65 pay out. Stretch the same cover to 100, and nearly 98 in 100 would. For women, the odds rise from about one in 20 to about 95 in 100.

Even cover to 85 would pay out for just over half of men aged 35, and for just over a third of women.

This is also why the premiums are so different. An insurer can price cover to 65 low because it seldom has to pay. With cover to 99, it expects to pay in most cases, and it sets the premium with that in mind.

The averages point the same way. Residents born in 2025 can expect to live to 83.9, and those who have already reached 65 can expect to reach 86.6, going by SingStat’s latest life table release.

Either way, that is about 19 to 22 years after term cover to 65 ends. Our guide to how long Singaporeans live covers this in more detail.

Premiums, Payouts, and What Happens at 99

A worked example shows how the total premiums you pay compare with what your family would receive.

Take Daniel, a 35-year-old non-smoker who buys $1,000,000 of death and TPD cover that runs to age 100. His premium is about $3,613 a year, and he pays it every year until the policy ends.

Here’s what he would have paid, and what his family would receive, depending on when he dies.

If Daniel dies atYears of premiums paidTotal premiums paidPayout to his family
4510$36,130$1,000,000
6530$108,390$1,000,000
8550$180,650$1,000,000
9965$234,845$1,000,000

The payout stays the same at every age. Only the amount he paid in changes.

If he dies at 45, his family receives $1,000,000 to replace the income he would have earned. Even in the longest case, after 65 years of premiums, the payout is still more than four times what he paid. The same $1,000,000 would be paid if he became totally and permanently disabled instead, as defined in the policy.

Note: estimated annual premium for a 35-year-old male non-smoker, for $1,000,000 of death and TPD cover to age 100 with premiums paid to age 100, based on a quote from one insurer in 2026. Your premium will depend on your age, health, and underwriting.

Some plans also let you finish paying earlier, for example at 65, in return for a higher premium each year.

If you outlive the cover, the policy usually just ends and nothing is paid.

Some plans do give something back. A few return some of the premiums you paid for the base plan, while others pay out the sum assured when you reach the end of the policy. That second option usually comes through an extra rider, which adds to the premium.

On 2025 death rates, only about 2% of men and 5% of women aged 35 would reach 100. Weigh how much that protection is worth to you against what it adds to the premium.

Term to 99 works best once your family’s income protection is in place, you are accepted on standard terms, and you can keep up the premiums for decades without squeezing your retirement savings. If your budget is tight, the same premium buys far more cover through a standard term plan to 65, and in my opinion that should come first.

Every application is subject to underwriting and full health disclosure, and the younger and healthier you are when you apply, the lower your premium is likely to be.

This matters more for cover to 99 than for shorter plans. If the insurer accepts you with a premium loading (a higher premium because of a health condition), the extra usually applies for the whole premium term. Over several decades it adds up, and a shorter term plan may then be the better fit.

Best Term Insurance Till 99 in Singapore (Comparison for 2026)

singlife

Singlife Elite Term II

Elite Term II is Singlife’s main term life plan. The base plan pays out on death or terminal illness, and there are two ways to keep it running until age 99.

The first is Regular Pay. You pay premiums for as long as you are covered, the same as an ordinary term plan, and nothing is paid out if you outlive the policy.

The second is Limited Pay, which in my opinion is the more interesting option for cover to 99. You can finish paying in 5 or 10 years, or by age 65 or 75, and your cover still runs to 99.

Limited Pay is also the only version with a Longevity Reward. If you hold a Limited Pay policy and live to 99, Singlife pays you 100% of the total premiums you paid for the base plan. Rider premiums are not part of this.

The same goes for the surrender benefit, which Regular Pay policies don’t have. From the third policy year until your premium term ends, you can surrender the policy for 30% of the base plan premiums you have paid.

Once your premium term has ended, that rises to 80%. If you later decide you no longer need the cover, you can end it and get most of your base plan premiums back.

HSBC Life

HSBC Life Term Protect Secure

HSBC Life Term Protect Secure covers death and terminal illness. Its longest coverage term runs to age 100, and the minimum sum assured is $100,000.

If you choose cover to 100, you can add the Guaranteed Survival Payout II rider, which is only offered with this term. It pays out your prevailing sum assured if you outlive the policy, so the policy still pays out even if you live past 100.

You pay extra for this rider.

The plan also has a one-time FlexiMilestone Benefit. For cover to 100, it opens at age 60 or the start of the 20th policy year, whichever is later, and stays open for two years.

In that window, you have three choices. Keep your cover as it is, lower it and receive a proportionate cash payout, or end the policy and take back 50% of the total premiums paid for the base plan.

That last option is useful if, by your 60s, your children are working and your home loan is gone, and you would rather have some premiums back than keep the full cover.

income

Income Insurance TermLife Solitaire

Income Insurance’s TermLife Solitaire is meant for larger sums assured, with a minimum of $500,000 per policy. The basic policy covers death and terminal illness.

Its longest term runs up to age 100 (last birthday).

There isn’t much more to it than that, which is partly the point. You pay premiums for the full policy term, with no option to finish paying early.

There is no cash value and no surrender value. If you outlive the policy, it ends and nothing is paid out.

fwd

FWD Future First

FWD Future First covers death and terminal illness, with a fixed term that can run up to age 100.

It is pure protection with no cash value, and FWD states that no benefits are paid when the policy expires. Outlive the cover, and nothing comes back.

The policy can be held in Singapore dollars, Australian dollars, British pounds, or US dollars. Over a policy you might keep for 60 years or more, that choice matters if your children are likely to settle overseas.

china taiping

China Taiping i-Assure99

China Taiping calls i-Assure99 a non-participating whole life protection plan, but the cover ends at age 99, so for most buyers it does the same job as term cover to 99.

The base plan pays 100% of the sum assured on death or total and permanent disability (TPD) before age 99.

Reach 99 and the plan pays a Longevity Benefit of 100% of the sum assured. The full sum assured is paid either way, whether you pass away before 99 or live to it, and you don’t need a separate rider for it.

You can choose to pay premiums to age 65 or to age 99.

From age 80, the policy also has a guaranteed surrender value, which gives you a way to cash it in if you need the money later in life.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is term insurance till 99?
Term insurance till 99 is a term life policy that covers you until age 99 or 100, depending on the insurer, instead of ending at 65 or 70. If you pass away while covered, your family receives a lump sum. Most plans have no cash value, though a few return part of your premiums or pay out the sum assured if you outlive the cover.

  2. Is term insurance till 99 worth it?
It can be, once your family’s income protection is in place and you can keep up the premiums for decades. Because the cover runs almost a lifetime, it’s far more likely to pay out than cover to 65, though a term plan to 65 gives you more cover for the same premium.

  3. Is this service free?
    Yes, there’s no fee involved.

  4. How long does the appointment take?
It typically takes around 45 minutes. However, it can be longer for more complex situations or if you have further questions.

  5. Are there any obligations?
Depending on your situation, we may or may not recommend solutions. If we do, it’s entirely up to you to go ahead with it. As consumers ourselves, we dislike high-pressure tactics.

  6. Should I bring my existing policies?
Yes! If you do have them, do bring them along (or a policy summary) as we can provide more accurate feedback.

  7. How is this appointment conducted?
This can be done over a zoom video call or a meet-up.
